Plitvice National Park is located in Croatia. It is accepted as one of the most gorgeous natural attractions in Europe. The national park was established in 1949 for the landscape here was so significant and beauteous. In 1979, the park was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The Plitvice Lakes had been popular among visitors since late 19th century, the first hotel here was built in1896. The system of 16 interlinked lakes can always make visitors stunning. However, in March 1991 it became a victim of the Croatian War. It took some damage when the forces were battling.
The park is situated on the eponymous Plitvice plateau. The lakes are formed by streams from the mountains. All the 16 lakes collectively cover a region of about two square-km, forming an 8-km-long water system flowing to the Korana River. The lakes are surrounded by karstic rocks such like limestone and dolomite, adding another characteristic of the sacred scenery.
The whole park is filled with trees like spruce, beech and fir trees. The flora here has a wide variety that can diversify from Alpine to Mediterranean vegetation because of its wide extension of climate zones. And the place is also habitat to a wide range of animals. Rare species like European eagle, brown bear, lynx and capercaillie, as well as common animals and more than 120 kinds of bird species can be found here.
Plitvice Lakes National Park is also popular for the numerous waterfalls. In the park there are many choices for hiking in different difficulty and time costing. The whole trip around the park will take you around 4 to 5 hours, and the bus to the park entrance isn’t always on time and won’t wait for you. So plan an early trip. Your ticket is included boat and bus services in the park, make good use of them.
Caution: Swimming is not allowed in the park.
Mother bear with cubs is danger, but lone bear will be more frightened than you do.
Never try to run away from bears or you may become a prey.
You can find a homestay through local travel agencies or check in one of the hotels. But camping will be a more inspiring experience. The camping yard is in Korana, a town 8km from the park. Facilities like dining places, shop and toilets are well prepared. You can renew your entrance ticket at the information office of the camping yard, which is a good news to spend more time in the park.
Notice that the bus from the camping yard to the park is only once a day.
